Q. What is the daily work of a lawyer like?
A. A lawyer may win a case and receive recognition in the media, but often their contributions go unmentioned. In terms of the final outcome, the lawyer is rarely acknowledged. People often say that the judge acquitted the defendant; while it is true that the judge makes the final decision, it is the lawyer who guides them to reach that conclusion. If you were a lawyer in this country and suddenly achieved success, you could quickly establish a reputation. But maintaining that reputation over the years is much more challenging. This profession should not be viewed merely as a means of making a living; it is important for lawyers to approach their work with dedication and integrity.
Kordzadze Law Office is dedicated to offering a diverse range of qualified legal services to its clients, which has established its reputation as one of the most reliable law firms in Georgia. This year, the firm was honored with the Golden Brand award, marking its sixteenth recognition as the top legal firm in the country.
Q. What do you think one of the main challenges in the legal profession is?
A. If you are not fully engaged in your client’s case and their needs, then I believe something is lacking. When a person faces the possibility of losing their freedom, their property, or being prohibited from seeing their child, it is essential to sympathize with their situation and understand their emotional state completely. Without this understanding, I don’t think you can effectively do this job. This profession requires a tremendous amount of energy and is considered one of the most stressful, second only to banking. Therefore, if you don’t find inspiration and ways to relax through other interests, it can be very challenging. Personally, I find that writing poetry helps me relax.
Q. Admission to the Faculty of Law has been highly sought after and, so to speak, prestigious for years. Your son is also studying law, as far as we know. Did you ever encourage him to pursue this profession?
A. To be honest, never! During his school days, my son expressed his interest in becoming a lawyer, and I kept hoping he might change his mind. I didn’t do anything to encourage this interest — he never attended a trial with me or observed my work. Law is a challenging profession, and I believe the range of career options has expanded significantly, allowing for other choices. A parent’s profession certainly influences a child’s interests, especially if the parent is successful in their field.
Q. Let’s discuss the moral aspects of being a lawyer. What moral obligation does a lawyer have when a client, even a criminal, comes to them?
A. When I teach students about ethics in law, we often explore similar topics. Regardless of how guilty a person may be, they should receive a punishment that corresponds to their crime, and this is where the role of the lawyer becomes crucial. There are instances of morally serious cases in which a perpetrator has committed acts that challenge a lawyer’s own ethical standards if they were to provide a defense. Typically, such serious crimes require mandatory defense.
Another interesting dynamic arises when the charges are severe, but you believe in your client’s innocence. If you possess the power to defend them effectively, you can break down barriers for justice. There is no greater honor for a lawyer than to defend an innocent person. The moments when you see the relief and gratitude in their eyes — particularly when they are told they are free — are unforgettable. Those expressions stick with you because, in that person’s life, you have provided them with their most precious gift: freedom. This rewarding feeling often outweighs all the challenges of the profession.
Q. Can you describe a standout case that was significant to you?
A. As the saying goes, there are no small roles, only small actors. I believe the same applies to cases. Regardless of their visibility, the responsibility and the approach to each case should always be treated with the utmost seriousness. I have worked on cases that received little media attention as well as those that generated significant public interest. Some of these cases, while I was just a part of them, have had a profound impact on various aspects of our country.
Q. How can a fair judicial system impact the country’s progress?
A. The judicial system is a unique structure where a significant portion of people are often dissatisfied. However, when the system is fair, even those who lose can acknowledge whether they lost justly. It is crucial for a government to take the risk of reforming the judicial system in this country. Without this change, we will struggle to achieve progress and build a better future. A functioning court system is essential for business, interpersonal relationships, national unity, and electoral stability. If we establish a reliable court system, we will be able to advance swiftly. Without it, we will remain trapped in the limitations of a post-Soviet society.
